If you own a Nissan Titan XD and your truck no longer rides or handles like it did when it was new, worn-out struts and shocks may be part of the problem.
Factory suspension components can lose damping performance as they accumulate miles. As the shocks and struts become less effective, the truck can feel softer, less controlled, and less stable over bumps. You may also notice more body movement when braking, accelerating, towing, or driving over uneven roads.
Replacing the factory suspension is a great way to improve the ride and handling of your Titan XD. But with several options available, how do you know which suspension is right for you?
At High Road Suspension, we offer everything from budget-friendly Bilstein struts and shocks to premium ICON and King coilovers and rear shocks. The best choice depends on how you use your Titan XD, how much lift you want, the ride quality you are looking for, and your budget.
Struts or Coilovers: What's the Difference?
Before choosing a suspension upgrade, it is important to understand the difference between a strut and a coilover.
A traditional strut combines a shock absorber with a coil spring mounted around it. The shock controls the movement of the suspension while the spring supports the weight of the truck.
A coilover performs the same basic job but uses a more advanced shock design. High-quality coilovers typically separate the oil and nitrogen within the shock, allowing them to manage heat more effectively. Some coilovers also use an external reservoir that provides additional oil capacity and cooling. The result is a suspension system that can provide better control, improved ride quality, and greater performance, particularly when driving off-road, towing, hauling, or traveling over rough terrain.
Coilovers also offer another major advantage: rebuildability. Depending on the model of coilover or shock you choose, you can adjust the ride height and, in some cases, the damping. This allows you to fine-tune the suspension to your truck and your driving style. If you want a fuller breakdown of the two, see our guide on the difference between a coilover and a strut.
Bilstein Struts: A Great Budget-Friendly Upgrade
If you are looking for an affordable replacement for the factory front struts, Bilstein is a great place to start. At High Road Suspension, we offer two Bilstein options for the Titan XD: the Bilstein 5100 and Bilstein 6100.
Bilstein 5100
The Bilstein 5100, shown here, is a popular choice for Titan XD owners who primarily drive on the street but want an improvement over the factory suspension.
The 5100 provides a controlled ride quality. It is particularly well suited for daily driving, commuting, and occasional light off-road use. The 5100 is also height adjustable, allowing approximately up to 2 inches of front lift, depending on the application.
Unlike a complete coilover, the Bilstein 5100 is not supplied with a coil spring. Your factory spring and associated hardware must be transferred to the Bilstein strut during installation. The height adjustment is accomplished using snap-ring grooves that allow the spring perch to be positioned higher on the strut.
The 5100 is a good choice if you primarily drive on pavement, want a mild improvement in ride and handling, want approximately 1 to 2 inches of front lift, are working with a limited budget, and do not need adjustable damping or a rebuildable suspension.
Bilstein 6100
The Bilstein 6100, shown here, takes the basic Bilstein design a step further. It uses a larger shock body than the 5100, which provides additional oil capacity and cooling. This makes the 6100 a better choice for drivers who spend more time on rough roads, farm roads, trails, or other demanding terrain. The on-road ride quality is also noticeably firmer than the 5100.
Like the 5100, the 6100 is height adjustable and requires the factory coil springs and hardware to be transferred to the new struts.
The 6100 makes sense if you drive on rough roads or off-road, prefer a firmer and more controlled ride, want approximately 1 to 2 inches of front lift, want more off-road performance than the 5100, and still want to stay within a reasonable budget.
Both Bilstein options are excellent choices for customers who want a simple, affordable upgrade. However, if your priority is maximum ride quality, adjustability, and long-term rebuildability, a premium coilover is the next step.
ICON Coilovers: A Major Upgrade in Ride Quality
If ride quality and suspension performance are more important than simply replacing your factory struts, ICON coilovers, shown here, are an excellent option.
ICON describes its ride quality as "smooth yet planted." In other words, the suspension is designed to absorb bumps while keeping the truck controlled and stable.
Unlike a traditional replacement strut, ICON coilovers are fully height adjustable. Depending on the application, they can be adjusted from approximately stock height to 3 inches of lift. One of the biggest advantages is that the ride height can be adjusted while the coilovers are installed on the truck. ICON coilovers are also fully rebuildable, meaning the shocks can be serviced and rebuilt rather than simply being replaced when they eventually wear out.
ICON also offers multiple performance levels, so you can choose the amount of capability and adjustability that matches how you use your truck. For a full breakdown of ICON's tiered system, see our guide on ICON suspension stages explained.
Choose ICON if you want a major improvement in ride quality, adjustable ride height, a rebuildable suspension, multiple performance levels to choose from, the option of adjustable damping, and you spend time off-road.
King Coilovers: Premium Ride Quality and Performance
If ride quality is your top priority, King is the premium option. King coilovers and rear shocks, shown here, are built for exceptional ride quality and high-performance suspension.
King uses external-reservoir coilovers up front and piggyback-reservoir rear shocks, providing additional oil capacity and cooling for consistent performance during extended or demanding driving. Both the coilovers and rear shocks are fully rebuildable and can potentially last the life of the vehicle with proper service. King is also available with adjustable damping, letting you tune the suspension for daily driving, towing, or off-road use.
Choose King if ride quality is your top priority, you want premium suspension performance, you spend significant time off-road, you want external reservoirs, you want rebuildable shocks, and you want adjustable damping.
What About Rear Shocks?
The rear of the truck deserves just as much attention as the front. We offer rear shock options across the same tiers, from Bilstein rear shocks as an affordable upgrade to premium ICON and King rear shocks with reservoirs for improved cooling and performance. Matching your rear shocks to your front suspension keeps the truck balanced and makes the most of the upgrade.
If You Have a 6-Inch Lift
If your Titan XD already has a 6-inch Rough Country or Fabtech bracket lift, consider upgrading the front strut spacers to our King full-length coilovers. For the rear, we offer both ICON and King options designed specifically for the increased rear lift height.
So, What's the Best Suspension for Your Titan XD?
There is not one suspension system that is best for every Titan XD. The right choice depends on how you use your truck and how much you want to spend. Think of suspension upgrades in terms of how much you want to improve your truck.
Bilstein is an excellent choice when you want a noticeable improvement without spending a lot of money. ICON is the next step when ride quality, suspension performance, adjustability, and off-road capability become more important. King is the premium option for customers who want exceptional ride quality and high-performance suspension.
There is no reason to spend money on suspension features you will not use. On the other hand, if you spend weekends off-road, tow frequently, or simply want your Titan XD to ride as well as possible, investing in a higher-end suspension can make a dramatic difference.
At High Road Suspension, we specialize in helping customers choose the suspension that fits their specific truck and how they use it. If you are not sure whether Bilstein, ICON, or King is right for your Titan XD, contact High Road Suspension. We are happy to help you select the correct front and rear suspension based on your truck's lift height, how you drive it, and your budget.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the Bilstein 5100 and 6100 for a Titan XD?
Both are affordable, height-adjustable front struts that reuse your factory spring. The 5100 gives a controlled ride best suited to street driving and light off-road, with up to about 2 inches of lift. The 6100 uses a larger shock body for more oil capacity and cooling, rides firmer, and suits rougher roads and trails.
Are ICON or King coilovers worth it over Bilstein struts?
If you want the biggest gains in ride quality, adjustability, and durability, yes. ICON and King are full coilovers (spring included), height-adjustable on the truck, and fully rebuildable, so they can be serviced instead of replaced. King adds external reservoirs and the most refined ride. Bilstein is the better value if you mainly want an affordable, solid upgrade.
Can I adjust ride height with these on the Titan XD?
The Bilstein struts adjust lift via snap-ring perch positions (set during assembly). ICON and King coilovers are continuously height-adjustable, and can be adjusted while installed on the truck, from roughly stock height up to about 3 inches depending on the application.
What suspension do I need if my Titan XD has a 6-inch bracket lift?
If you already run a 6-inch Rough Country or Fabtech bracket lift, you can upgrade the front strut spacers to our King full-length coilovers, and use ICON or King rear options built for the increased rear lift height. That turns a basic bracket lift into a genuine performance setup.
Do I need to upgrade the rear shocks too?
It is strongly recommended. Matching your rear shocks to your front suspension keeps the truck balanced and gets the most out of the upgrade. We offer rear options across the same tiers, Bilstein for value, ICON and King with reservoirs for better cooling and performance.
